Notion magazine presentation

Wire

WIRE

Front cover

-          The mast head is set out really nicely on the page making it really stand out.
-          There is writing across the masthead which is a little unusual; this writing is in black and quite a common font making it really bold and noticeable.
-          The lead story is actually going vertically down the page which is very rare and unconventional.
-          The rest of the writing on the page is kept to a minimum which works effectively and makes the words that are there stand out more.
-          The cost price and barcode in on the bottom right side which is quite common in magazines.
-          The lead image is different to most; the man on the front is dressed unusually casual and a bit un-kept.
-          There is also quite a lot of whitespace on the cover which again makes it quite different from most music magazines as there are quite busy normally.

Contents

-          As with a lot of music magazines the contents has another picture of the front cover on it, this time actually being the main attention grabber.
-          The contents is set our different to the previous magazines I have looked at, the number is actually after the title of the article and after the number is the brief explanation as to what the article is about.  Finally, the person who wrote the item is as the end.
-          Also rather than having separate sections to categorize the things within the magazine, the things that are found on the front cover are in red and a bigger font to emphasise the main stories.
-          Just as the front cover there is also a lot of whitespace on the contents pages, which personally I think it makes it look quite boring.
-           They also refrain from calling the contents by its proper name and call it “inside” and below this are the name of the magazine and the date, this is quite common within magazines.

Double Page Spread

-          This is mostly taken up by the lead image, which is actually cut and half is on the other page.
-          Again the picture its self is of the DJ looking usually casual and extremely un-posed. He is also wearing the same as the picture on the cover which is very uncommon.
-          There is again lots of white space making the spread very simplistic.
-          The By line and photographer is actually worked into the stand first which is quite rare but is in bold making it more bold.
-          The heading is a different font as it is actually quite hard to read due to there being quite large spaces between each letter. However, the black makes it easier to stand out.
-          The font of the stand first is extremely typical and common bringing out a little more tradition in a page that is unconventional.

Notion

Front cover

-          “The fashion issue” heading suggests each issue has a theme running throughout, which is advertised on the cover. This is used a unique selling point to encourage people to buy the magazine and appeal to a wider audience as music magazines aren’t always peoples first choice the theme could sway them.

-          The masthead is eye catching with a big bold font.

-          Features a popular chart music celebrity to encourage people to buy it. People want to be like celebrities so will buy it to be like them.

-          “Make your heart go WOW” eye catching but still quite mysterious, encouraging people to want to find out more.

-           The writing underneath the banner looks good but the font is too small for a lot of people to read comfortably.

-          The writing on the right side isn’t very descriptive as to what the articles are about but, that could work in the magazines favour as it could entice the reader into buying it.

-          The front cover contains many different fonts and font sizes, this looks a bit untidy but it does kind of work as even though it’s slightly more unconventional it makes it unique.

-          It is a very minimalistic cover and has a lot of whitespace but this does make it stand out against other magazines as again it is unconventional. This also works well with all the different fonts to not make the cover too busy.

-          The demographics of the magazine, suggested by the front cover imply the audience would be mainly female, between 18-30 years old and with a keen interest in fashion and music.

Contents

-          Black on white typograph keeps it bold and makes it really stick out.

-          There is a sidebar of pictures to the left that relate to the articles which makes it easier for the reader to understand what the main articles will be about. It also makes the page a little more interesting.

-          Each section shows a page number with the name of who wrote the article and the name of the article, this makes it really clear to see what is inside the magazine.

-          There is also a brief explanation about each article and what it is about helping the reader to decide whether it would be of any interest to them.

-          Each article is sectioned off into groups such as “the fashion issue”, “front of back” and “albums” helping show what the magazines main stories are about and what they have to offer each week.

-          A copy of the cover and online cover on the right hand side to show the exclusive online cover and encourage people to subscribe to it.

Double Page Spread

-          The lead image of Nicola Roberts dressed really fashionable. The way she is posed has dominative connotations. This picture would also make women feel inferior to her because she is so successful and attractive – things most women aspire to be.

-          It has lots of whitespace and it very minimalistic making it easier to read.

-          The title is exactly the same as the lead story on the front cover representing a running theme throughout.

-          There is also a six line stand first which is worded in such a way to attract an audience that would be quite intellectual and share a keen interest in celebrities.

-          The heading “Notion and Nicola Roberts” helps represent the integration of music and fashion for the fashion issue as Nicola is seen as a high figure in fashion.

-          There is a by line placed quite randomly in the middle of the whitespace.

-          They have kept the colours quite plain apart from the picture to really make it stand out.

MixMag

Mixmag

Front cover

-          Above the masthead is a small explanation of what the magazine is, which is good as it leaves no confusion as to what sort of music the magazine is about.
-          The masthead its self is in white and quite an original font which not only represents the genre of music but also makes it stands out.
-          The name of the magazine itself also really reflects the genre of music.
-          The lead story is shown quite differently as is goes across the middle of the page, greatly cutting across the lead image and is also different with the block yellow backing.
-          The lead image is also very unconventional as the picture is cut out with a pink/purple outline around it, this does however make the picture stand out and adds more colour to the cover.
-          The other articles with headings on the page are all done in black and some have a spot on strap line explaining what the article is about.
-          The bottom right corner has a ripped effect with added information just as the barcode and cost price.
-          The man on the front is in black and white and looks quite serious; having the connotation that it shows the magazine is serious about its music.
-          The language used on the cover especially “get some Dutch courage and ask your newsagent” suggests the target audience to be fairly young adults possibly 18-25 years old.

Contents

-          The contents page is set over two pages spacing it out more.
-          The pages are both black with write writing helping it to be bolder.
-          One the first page there is a picture of a pool party scene that is part of an article on page 72; this particular image shows the people involved having fun suggesting that the magazine its self is also really fun.
-          The contents itself features a number and name for the article and a brief explanation of what the article is about.
-          On the first page there is some information about the free gift of a CD that was given along with the magazine reminding people to listen to it. Helping keep an interest in the music as a result helping to sell the magazine.
-          There is also a header at the top of each page titled “Contents” with the name of the magazine, and the date. This keeps a running theme and format to show consistency within the magazine.
-          There is very little whitespace on the contents pages. The pages are very full and busy.

Double Page Spread

-          Both pages are completely black and white making it almost authentic looking which works well as they are actually talking about a dead DJ.
-          The lead image takes up most of the space of the spread and is of the DJ the article is about. However the image has quite reflective connotations as DJ Mehdi is looking rather lost in thought himself.
-          The column of text is unjustified making the page a little less sharp as it is so square and minimalistic.
-          The black on whit writing is worded in such a way that the audience would have to know exactly what they were talking about to understand, showing that the audience must have a keen interest this type of music.
-          The font is very conventional. Taking this and all the other aspects of the spread in to consideration it’s almost as though it has been stripped down completely  so there is no fuss and it is simply about commemoration such an influential person.

Masthead Comparison

The mastheads I chose to compare are extremely different to each other. “NOTION” is in capitals and looks almost as though someone is shouting it at you making a really bold statement as pop music tends to. The other contains very curvy letters again reflecting the sort of music as country music tends to be quite soft compared to some of the symphonised beats used in pop music. Another big different is the actually name. “NOTION” relates to the music but also has another meaning whereas “Country Music” is exactly what is says on the tin. “Country Music” has other things around the mast head such as the date and the price, “NOTION” has neither it simply just stands alone adding to the whole minimalistic approach the whole magazine takes. In relation to the background/aspirations of each magazine that is reflected in each masthead “NOTION” is a very similar font to “Vogue” suggesting they are aiming for a similar sort of audience and focus on mainstream music and issues, the other mast head has similar text to that found on acoustic guitars which is exactly why it was chosen, it is a popular font in Nashville – the pace where country music originates from.

How Does the Journalist Use Written Language to Appeal to the Target Audience?

How Does the Journalist Use Written Language to Appeal to the Target Audience?

One way of a journalist to appeal to the audience is though specific language choices. Selecting certain words and descriptions creates a particular stereotype of a reader that can then be expanded on by using pictures and other elements.

Within the Usher article language is selected carefully to appeal to the audience. Even within the stand first language such as “sexed-up” and “daddy” create a more informal feel than articles you may find in more sophisticated magazines. Within the interview the words Usher uses himself such as finishing sentences with “man” and not using proper English “ain’t done” conveys a sense of what the audience may be like, they probably also use similar words and phrases again showing they may lack a certain sense of sophistication unlike readers of other magazines. There is also swearing within the article “cause I don’t want no dumb shit” which would imply that it is aimed at people over the age of 16 as to not cause them any offence through bad language.

The overall tone of the article is quite dignifying to Usher. Clover Hope questions him over many issues he has had in his life and he answers them in a way that avoids embarrassment. The issues that the interviewer brings up not only give the article a specific tone but it also makes it easier to attract an audience, a chosen audience would be people that have also potentially been through these issues and could relate to Usher. Taking this and the use of words into consideration it defiantly makes the article appeal to the target audience, after all why would someone read something if it was considered above or below them or a tone that they couldn’t relate to or care about.

Michal Jackson was an extremely popular and well respected artists and the main quote of the page is about him. This would entice readers to read the article as they were such big fans of him. Also Usher has had frequent comparisons made between him and Michael and as his career has gone off radar this shows that the article may offer a kind of explanation to the reader as to why he has been so unheard of in recent years.

How are Women Presented in 50 Cents Video "Candy Shop"?

How women are presented in 50 cents video Candy shop

In coherence with the name of the song the women are basically seen as candy, a kind of indulgence for men. As the video progresses the women are portrayed like sex slaves to the men however, always seem the dominant figure for example the scene where the women in pink whips off the males clothes. Whether this is as a result of the males personal sexual fantasises or how he feels women should be portrayed it is unclear.

Although it may be for the wrong reasons, the men in the video clearly appreciate the women; paying them in compliments, looks or even possibly sexual favours. Both genders are dressed in clothes to perceive an image that they were good looking for example: the women in quite provocative clothing and the men showing off their abs and wearing expensive clothing. In this respect I don’t think women are presented very differently.

The fact there is an extremely unfair ratio of men to women is quite demining. There are thousands more poor people than there are kings and I think this is an aspect the video is touching upon. Showing the men to be something that all the girls would want and also, they are that powerful they could get any girl that they wanted. Despite the fact the women are seen as being quite confident the Candy image suggests that they are not even human, they are simply just some object for men to use as and when they feel like it.

Overall it could be originally perceived as being quite sexist. However once looked at in more detail I think that it is actually just an over exaggeration of what most men and women aspire to be. The men have all the females wanting them and the females wanting to be desired by the men.

The Motely Crew Notes

The Motley Crew Notes

The Motely crew are presented as people:

-          Not to be messed with and like to cause trouble

-          Bikers (bikers have a negative image)

-          They also like to think they are desirable to women (get all the girls)

-          That they are bad boys (carry knives and are feared by people)

-          Womanizers

-          Chauvinistic

My Contents Page

My contents page is also in black and white but its white on black, contrasting the front cover. After researching magazines and their contents pages i noticed that they tend to use italtics on the contents hence why i used them on my own contents page. I used a picture of a girl revising at school as it is something a lot of people at college can relate to seeing as a lot of students would have only just left school and have new exams coming up. I mentioned fashion, lifestyle and college stuff as these are quite important aspects to student life along with the special features that also realate to students. i also added the date at the top of the page as this is also quite common within alot of magazines to keep them related to the front cover.
My magazine is mainly aimed at females hence why many of teh topics on the front are female related such as diet although it could still apeal to males. I wanted to make the magazine colours quite simple hence why I decided on black and white. I found it really hard to cut out the background of the picture but i managed it in the end although not to a fantastic standard. I wanted the model too look quite attractive and a little flirtaous and i think i managed this well. I called the magazine speak because that is bascially what i want the magazine to do - speak about the college and issues its students may have to deal with. Also the fact it was 5 letters long meant it sat really nicely with the chosen font acros the page.

Design Brief

Band Name:  Nebula

Target Audience demographic:

What is their age range? What other music do they listen to? What other interests might they have? What style of clothing do they wear?
Age rage is of 18-30 and typically female. They would usually listen to quite a range of music but usually: Pop, RnB and Rap. Fashion would be of another huge interest to them and taking care of their appearance, also celebrity gossip and being in on the latest trends. They would probably be keen party goers who like to live a little on the edge just like the girls within the band. The girls within the band all have a distinct style but all remain hugely fashionable so the target audience would be girls who dress similar to this and aspire to be like the girls in the band.

Imagery and colour schemes:

What images are likely to appear on the front cover? (Would the sugar babes use a picture of an eagle eating worms out of a rotting skull?) Should you expect to see darker colours, bright colours, pastels or black and whites?
Images of attractive and stylish girls are likely to appear to make the target audience feel inferior to the girls and buy the album to be more like them; it would make sense to have the actual band on the cover. As the girls are quite sexy and quite misbehaving I expect the cover to be black and white to not only reflect these ideas but to also make it stand out against other pop music covers as being a little different.

Type Face/ Font styles:

What type faces have you found that could be appropriate? Which ones would be way off the mark?
I’m extremely keen on using the font impact label as it is frequently used in high-street stores which would coincide with the idea that the girls are extremely fashionable. Also it is black and white which would keep it in with the colour scheme. It’s quite bold as well which would also reflect the band member’s personalities. Any others I have looked at like Edwardian script wouldn’t  work very well and would probably look a lot better on a classical artists album cover as it is more of a classic style of writing.

Moodboard

This is my mood board for my album cover. I wanted it to reflect the different personalities that the girls would have within the group. Hence the reason all the girls involved in it are extremely fashionable but all differ from each other yet it still keeps that edgy feel. The people who would listen to the music would also tend to be girls like these maybe not exactly in the body shapes etc. but the way they view fashion. Also i wanted to express a random feel that's why the lips and boom box are also featured.

Album Cover Front and Back

This is my front cover of the album created by Nebula. Nebula is clearly a girl band that focuses on creating quite an edgy style of pop. The picture is my own photography and the background picture was taken from google. All the writing was taken from Dafont.com and is the font impact label, i have seen this font before and i thought it would be perfect as this is quite often used in clothes shop windows and i wanted the band to reflect fashion as well as their music.
The font is the same as the above to keep it within a particular style and the picture in the background is the same as the picture used on the front. All the song names reflect the edginess and the boundaries the girls of the band would tend to push to be that little bit different to most of the girl band in the current market.
