How women are
presented in 50 cents video Candy shop
In coherence
with the name of the song the women are basically seen as candy, a kind of
indulgence for men. As the video progresses the women are portrayed like sex
slaves to the men however, always seem the dominant figure for example the
scene where the women in pink whips off the males clothes. Whether this is as a
result of the males personal sexual fantasises or how he feels women should be
portrayed it is unclear.
Although it
may be for the wrong reasons, the men in the video clearly appreciate the women;
paying them in compliments, looks or even possibly sexual favours. Both genders
are dressed in clothes to perceive an image that they were good looking for
example: the women in quite provocative clothing and the men showing off their
abs and wearing expensive clothing. In this respect I don’t think women are
presented very differently.
The fact
there is an extremely unfair ratio of men to women is quite demining. There are
thousands more poor people than there are kings and I think this is an aspect
the video is touching upon. Showing the men to be something that all the girls
would want and also, they are that powerful they could get any girl that they
wanted. Despite the fact the women are seen as being quite confident the Candy image suggests that they are not
even human, they are simply just some object for men to use as and when they
feel like it.
Overall it
could be originally perceived as being quite sexist. However once looked at in
more detail I think that it is actually just an over exaggeration of what most
men and women aspire to be. The men have all the females wanting them and the
females wanting to be desired by the men.
