Notion

Front cover

-          “The fashion issue” heading suggests each issue has a theme running throughout, which is advertised on the cover. This is used a unique selling point to encourage people to buy the magazine and appeal to a wider audience as music magazines aren’t always peoples first choice the theme could sway them.

-          The masthead is eye catching with a big bold font.

-          Features a popular chart music celebrity to encourage people to buy it. People want to be like celebrities so will buy it to be like them.

-          “Make your heart go WOW” eye catching but still quite mysterious, encouraging people to want to find out more.

-           The writing underneath the banner looks good but the font is too small for a lot of people to read comfortably.

-          The writing on the right side isn’t very descriptive as to what the articles are about but, that could work in the magazines favour as it could entice the reader into buying it.

-          The front cover contains many different fonts and font sizes, this looks a bit untidy but it does kind of work as even though it’s slightly more unconventional it makes it unique.

-          It is a very minimalistic cover and has a lot of whitespace but this does make it stand out against other magazines as again it is unconventional. This also works well with all the different fonts to not make the cover too busy.

-          The demographics of the magazine, suggested by the front cover imply the audience would be mainly female, between 18-30 years old and with a keen interest in fashion and music.

Contents

-          Black on white typograph keeps it bold and makes it really stick out.

-          There is a sidebar of pictures to the left that relate to the articles which makes it easier for the reader to understand what the main articles will be about. It also makes the page a little more interesting.

-          Each section shows a page number with the name of who wrote the article and the name of the article, this makes it really clear to see what is inside the magazine.

-          There is also a brief explanation about each article and what it is about helping the reader to decide whether it would be of any interest to them.

-          Each article is sectioned off into groups such as “the fashion issue”, “front of back” and “albums” helping show what the magazines main stories are about and what they have to offer each week.

-          A copy of the cover and online cover on the right hand side to show the exclusive online cover and encourage people to subscribe to it.

Double Page Spread

-          The lead image of Nicola Roberts dressed really fashionable. The way she is posed has dominative connotations. This picture would also make women feel inferior to her because she is so successful and attractive – things most women aspire to be.

-          It has lots of whitespace and it very minimalistic making it easier to read.

-          The title is exactly the same as the lead story on the front cover representing a running theme throughout.

-          There is also a six line stand first which is worded in such a way to attract an audience that would be quite intellectual and share a keen interest in celebrities.

-          The heading “Notion and Nicola Roberts” helps represent the integration of music and fashion for the fashion issue as Nicola is seen as a high figure in fashion.

-          There is a by line placed quite randomly in the middle of the whitespace.

-          They have kept the colours quite plain apart from the picture to really make it stand out.
