Dennotation and Connotaion


Denotation and Connotation

Denotations

-          Photography: its shows the main characters within the film, where the film is set and suggests the films genre.

-          Styling: both Characters are dressed well and smart.

-          Setting: A glamorous looking city

-          Props: A gun, Gloves, Evening gown, Red colour theme

Connotations

-          Photography: the way the characters look is quite seductive suggesting passion. The city in the background looks quite glamorous suggesting high class and wealth.

-          Styling: the fact that both characters are dressed well in what looks expensive clothing suggests that they could be quite wealthy and of a high social class.

-          Setting: again conveys a sense of wealth and glamour.

-          Props: the gun would suggest danger and criminal activity; the gloves also back this up as he clearly doesn’t want to get caught. The evening gown and overall dress suggests wealth and high social class and the red colour theme suggests passion and violence.

-          Setting; indoors

-          Camerawork; short quick shots

-          Props; books, photos, letters, newspapers

Connotation

-          Images/Props; hands suggest intimacy, books and newspapers suggest intelligence, Photos of children and dead/injured people suggest maybe illegal activity.

-          Setting; the fact that it is indoors suggest even more that it could be secret or criminal activity.

-          Camerawork; there is a lot going on because of the short and quick shots. No faces suggesting further secrecy and mystery.
